World Music
Sto Mi e MiloI produced, arranged, and conducted this traditional Macedonian music for the BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble. Don't miss the fun "yip" on the end.
Foreign rhythms + foreign instruments + foreign language + conducting 150 college students in a choir = Fun.

In a combined performance, the BYU Men's Chorus and the International Folk Dance Ensemble performed using this music as their accompaniment. I co-arranged and produced this medley of several traditional Welsh tunes. The loud booms and clicks toward the end of this excerpt are cues for the stomps and stick hits that were part of the performance.
Rosalind Hall, director of the BYU Men's Chorus, is from Wales. So it was a wonderful experience to co-arrange this music with her.

Israeli folk music is interesting because the state of Israel was formed relatively recently. The music retains a retro style, but much more modern in comparison to most folk music traditions.
I arranged, produced, and conducted the music for this recording for the BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble in 2010.
Most of the instruments are virtual/midi based instruments. Using real instruments always has a little more life, but realistic budgets sometimes require a compromise. Virtual instruments and technology have come a long way.

This is a medley of traditional tunes from Belarus, arranged and produced for the BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble in 2010.
Usually I need to bring in extra musicians when producing these, but in this case I was able to perform all of the instrument parts myself. Instruments include: guitar, a "wood-top" banjo that I built (which was tuned and played to resemble a Russian domra), bass, accordion (midi), and percussion.

This arrangement is a medley of 2 tunes you can sing with the "Redeemer of Israel" hymn text. One of the tunes was more common in 1835, the other is found in the 1985 edition of the LDS hymnbook.
Arr. and produced by Geoff Groberg. Geoff Groberg: piano, bass, guitars, and low D whistle. (I made the low D whistle out of a shower curtain rod!)

Program Music
Horse ChaosThis sequence was produced for an entry I made for a film music competition. It accompanied a comedic scene from an old silent film. This recording was produced entirely using midi instruments (GigaStudio). (I prefer the joy of working with real musicians and instruments, but it's not always possible.)

An intense chase scene, produced entirely using midi orchestral instruments and other midi instruments. Virtual instruments have come a long way, and continue to improve.

Relaxation and Music Therapy
Drop of RainMinimalist music I created entirely from real glass sounds. Glass objects were bowed, picked, blown, etc. and then virtual instruments were created from those sounds using various digital signal processing techniques. This music was created with relaxation and meditation (therapeutic purposes) in mind. (You can read more about it here.)

Producing/Engineering for Recording Artists
Stefanie HatchThis is an excerpt from a slightly different mix than Stefanie ended up with. She preferred to lose the piano, and bring in a fiddle. But I still like this early mix; consider it a "producer's cut." Stefanie's final version is also fantastic, of course.
I choose to use an old fashioned ribbon mic on Stephanie's voice. One of the things I'm interested in music is how the recording process and techniques affect the meaning in the music.

Tari Van Tassel came to me with a rough melody. I recorded her humming/singing, then composed/arranged/produced a backing track that she later added vocals to. This is the recording of "Praying for a Better Day" without the vocals. All Instruments and drums/percussion were performed and sequenced by me.

Silver City Pink was a very talented all-girl acoustic band. This song, Heaven Came Through, was composed by Catherine Larsen. I really enjoyed recording their CD. A fantastic combination of vocal talent, creative song writing, and skilled instrumentalists.

Miles To Go did a cover recording of Allison Krauss's "Maybe." Recorded live around a blumlein pair of ribbon mics. Great vocal harmonies without any pitch correction or anything like that. Another group where I really enjoyed recording their CD. Now, I often play bass with them when they perform.

Tel Dyer was in high school when we recorded this and other songs for his debut CD. He's constantly writing songs and performing with his younger sisters. He looks forward to a career in country music.
